Patriarchate of Romania: Press release

The Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Romania, presided by His Holiness the Patriarch Daniel, met on the 4th and 5th of July 2013 and conducted a working session.
Amongst the decisions taken, it is important to mention the following:
- On the subject of amending the Romanian Constitution the Holy Synod expressed its firm support for the definition of “the family as a natural unity/ unit , fundamental to the existence and development of the society. As such it is based on the free consensus between a man and a woman on the grounds of their equality and includes the obligations and rights to undertake the education and instruction of their children.  The state, in turn, protects and supports the parents.”

- Having analyzed the results of a nation - wide survey of 2011, the Holy Synod has approved a new social and pastoral program: Ways and means to strengthen the local pastoral work on the level of the diocese, the Region (Metropolis) and on the national level. The Romanian Orthodox church will intensify the pastoral work with the faithful in order to preserve the values of a natural and traditional family and in so doing to contribute to the reduction in the rate of divorce, abortions, family violence.
- The Holy Synod acknowledges and greatly appreciates the numerous initiatives and activities in the dioceses of the Romanian Orthodox church which promote the Orthodox spirituality.
